--"Requesting the Joint Committee on Government and Finance to conduct an interim study to determine whether hazardous materials and taxic substances may be presented on the rounds and in buidings of the state's public schools."
Whereas, Prolonged use of cleaning materials, pesticides and lead based paints in the public schools may have left residues which are toxic and potentially dangerous to children; and
Whereas, Many older school buildings are situated on property that may have been treated with pesticides, including chlordane which may pose a hazard to children; and
Whereas, Several public schools have been shut down in recent years because of the presence of hazardous materials, student illnesses caused by unknown contaminants and the appearance of dangerous chemicals in the fixtures of classrooms; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Joint Committee on Government and Finance is hereby requested to study whether hazardous materials and toxic substances may be present on the grounds and in the buildings of the public schools and to make recommendations to the Legislature regarding the same; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Joint Committee on Government and Finance report to the regular session of the Legislature, 1996, on its findings, conclusions and recommendations, together with drafts of any legislation necessary to effectuate its recommendations; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the expenses necessary to conduct this study, to prepare a report and to draft necessarylegislation be paid from legislative appropriations to the Joint Committee on Government and Finance.
